Yo Ho Ho! – Talk Like a Pirate Day!
Pirates remind me of Halloween …Jack Sparrow 🙂 and beautiful BEACHES!
It’s a day like today that bring up the local legends about Pirates landing here on the Eastern Shore. Some rumors believe the pirate Black Beard buried his treasure on Assateague beach; the 37 mile long barrier island located a few miles from Ocean City Maryland.
Assateague Island is owned and operated by the National Park Service, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Maryland State Parks. It’s a vacation resort with natural beauty that surrounds the area and provides habitat for numerous animals. Many claim that the Shipwreck of the Spanish Galleon caused English Colony ponies to swim ashore here about 300 years ago! You’ll most likely find the ponies in the marshes …and sometimes walking along the seashore. I was lucky enough to snap this photo of a beach visitor while relaxing in the sun!
You can spend the day swimming in the picturesque waves along the Atlantic coastline, sightseeing, kayaking, crabbing, bird watching, fishing, hunting, biking and other activities that continually make this a paradise for visitors that enjoy outdoor recreation. The national park service also allows off-road vehicles with permits in certain areas along the shoreline and offers several camping sites that are available by reservation. One of the more memorable experiences at Assateague is to light a fire at dusk. You’ve had your BBQ, the drinks are flowing and people are chilling out after a long day of surfing, fishing, doing nothing, etc… You’re not beach living unless you end your day with a beach campfire.
So ….rig your galleon Matey’s and set sail to Ocean City Maryland! Then just follow the Assateague Lighthouse on the way to the beach…it’s one of the most famous in the nation! It’s that time of year when the area now offers nearly as many amazing festivities and experiences in the fall as it does between Memorial Day and Labor Day. …It’s a treasure chest bursting with riches! Be a swashbuckling buccaneer, grab a telescope and look for adventure … you just might find the lost booty!
Shiver me ‘timbers, it’s a sailors’ dream!
